Miscellaneous Obsidian Cutting and Knapping Rough: Fireworks Obsidian, Snowflake Obsidian, Starry Night Obsidian Obsidian comes in many types. Rainbow and color sheens produce unusual cabochons and knapped items. The sheen is the result of the play of light in the flow layers of the volcanic glass. Although obsidian has a reputation of being difficult to polish, we have found that if the stone is ground through successively finer grits and the stone isn't heated too much during the polishing stage, that a high polish can be obtained with cerium oxide, or diamond. The surface of finished cabochons will have a crackly surface, but the stones are still fabulous. This material is not good for knapping.
Snowflake Obsidian Rough - $6.00/pound Locality: Utah We were excited to find these fine quality pieces of Snowflake Obsidian in our "archives", because good quality Snowflake Obsidian is getting harder to source. Great material for cabochons, carvings and knapping.
Starry Night Obsidian Rough - $1.50/pound Locality: Mexico Starry Night Obsidian cuts unusually colorful cabochons. The surface of finished cabochons will have a crackly surface, but the stones are still fabulous. This material is not good for knapping.
