Snowflake Obsidian Cutting and Knapping Rough: Snowflake Obsidian Our Snowflake Obsidian was hand selected for the best quality. The "snowflakes" in Snowflake Obsidian are needlelike crystals of cristobalite. The contrast of the light gray cristobalite against the black obsidian makes for fine gems, spheres and other lapidary works. Although obsidian has a reputation of being difficult to polish, we have found that if the stone is ground through successively finer grits and the stone isn't heated too much during the polishing stage, that a high polish can be obtained with cerium oxide, or diamond. Mohs hardness 5 to 5.5. Snowflake Obsidian Rough - $6.00/pound Locality: Utah We were excited to find these fine quality pieces of Snowflake Obsidian in our "archives", because good quality Snowflake Obsidian is getting harder to source. Great material for cabochons, carvings and knapping.
