Sheen Obsidian Cutting and Knapping Rough: Gold Sheen Obsidian Obsidian comes in many types. Rainbow and color sheens produce unusual cabochons and knapped items. The sheen is the result of the play of light in the flow layers of the volcanic glass. Although obsidian has a reputation of being difficult to polish, we have found that if the stone is ground through successively finer grits and the stone isn't heated too much during the polishing stage, that a high polish can be obtained with cerium oxide, or diamond. We've found that cut stones fly off the shelves! As with most sheen obsidians careful orientation and cutting is required to get the best results. We have Gold Sheen Obsidian in "AA" grade. AA" grade Gold Sheen Obsidian displays fine sheen, but may have a small zone or two where there is no sheen or less intense sheen. Often, "AA" Gold Sheen Obsidian may actually be a better buy than the "AAA" grade, because there may be more bang for the buck..
